Private dining Birmingham: what Siamais actually offers

Siamais does not have a separate private dining room with a door you can close. We would rather tell you that here than have you discover it on a site visit. What we do have is a large Thai restaurant and cocktail bar in Oozells Square, just behind Brindleyplace, laid out so a group can dine apart from the main floor without being cut off from the atmosphere.

The gold birdcage booths are the semi-private spots. A group inside one has its own table and some separation from the diners around it, which is what most people searching for private dining rooms in Birmingham are really after. Bigger groups can take a sectioned area of the restaurant. And when the dinner needs the room to itself, you hire the whole venue exclusively. Which route suits you comes down to numbers and how much privacy the occasion needs.

Where your group will dine: booth, section or whole venue

Start with your headcount, because that decides almost everything else. A family birthday dinner or a client meal usually sits comfortably in a birdcage booth on one of the banqueting set menus. A larger celebration, where you want everyone to dine together but do not need the building to yourselves, works in a sectioned area. Exclusive hire makes sense once your numbers and budget can carry a whole restaurant and bar for the session.

Tell us the number when you enquire and we will say plainly which of these is realistic for your date. We will not squeeze a group into a space that does not fit it, and we will not sell you exclusive hire if a booth would do the job.

  • Smaller groups: a gold birdcage booth, semi-private, set menu per head
  • Larger groups: a sectioned area of the restaurant, set menu or bespoke menu
  • Up to 120 seated or 150 standing: exclusive hire of the whole venue, from £2,000

What people book private dining for

Private dining here usually means a special occasion: birthday parties, anniversaries, engagement dinners, a small wedding meal where everyone should dine together. Thai food suits that kind of gathering because it is built for sharing, and a set menu priced per head means nobody ends the night splitting a bill eleven ways.

The other kind of booking is work. A corporate event can be a seated client dinner, or a drinks reception at the bar followed by a meal. If you are comparing restaurants in Birmingham for a group, the case for Siamais is short: Thai cuisine from a Thai kitchen, and a full cocktail bar in the same room. The flavour of the food does the work that a gimmick does elsewhere.

The three banqueting set menus and what they cost

Group dining at Siamais runs on three published set menus, each three courses and priced per person, so you know the food bill before anyone sits down. Taste of Siam is £44.95pp: Thai chilli chicken wings, prawn rolls, chicken satay, Thai fish cakes and spring rolls to start, then sweet and sour chicken, chicken red curry, beef in oyster sauce and lamb in chilli paste with rice.

The Siam Feast is £49.95pp and moves up to Thai fried calamari, golden bags and tempura prawns, followed by green curry chicken, stir fried duck in tamarind sauce, lamb in chilli paste and chicken Pad Thai. You can add a lobster middle course to The Siam Feast for £9.50pp, served as one lobster between four. Grounded in Siam, at £41.95pp, is fully vegetarian and vegan, with sweetcorn cakes, mango and papaya salad, vegetable massaman curry and tofu in choo chee paste. Bespoke menus are available for private hires.

Cocktails and drinks receptions for a private dinner

Siamais is a cocktail bar as much as a restaurant, so a private dinner here does not mean a short wine list and nothing else. The signature list, Book of Siam, has 20 drinks priced between £11.50 and £13. The house signature is the 1941, made with lychee liqueur, elderflower liqueur and apple. The Toffee Old Fashioned uses Toki whisky with dark chocolate and caramel, and Botanical Bliss is built on The Botanist gin with Thai basil and grapes.

For a table that wants a centrepiece, Bang Pai Falls is a £25 sharing cocktail served with fire, smoke and overproof tiki rum. Guests who are not drinking have eight Koh Mak mocktails at £7.95, including a Thai milk tea with tapioca pearls. There is also wine, champagne from Telmont to Dom Perignon, and Thai beers such as Singha and Chang. Everything ordered from the bar counts towards a private hire minimum spend.

Minimum spend, deposits and what exclusive hire costs

Exclusive hire of the whole venue starts from £2,000, and the figure moves with the day of the week and the time of day. A Tuesday lunch and a Saturday night are not the same ask. A minimum spend applies to every private hire, and all the food and drink Siamais supplies counts towards it. Your guests' dinner and cocktails are what meet the figure.

To confirm a private hire we take a 50% deposit. It is non-refundable, and it is deducted from your bill on the day, so it is money towards the event and not an extra charge. Ordinary table bookings work differently: those carry a £5 per person deposit, also taken off the bill. If you are unsure which applies to a group your size, ask when you enquire and we will confirm it before you pay anything.

Getting to Oozells Square from the city centre

Siamais is at 6-7 Brindley Place, Oozells Street, B1 2HS, on the Ikon Gallery side of the Brindleyplace estate. From Birmingham New Street it is about a 16 minute walk through Centenary Square, or roughly 7 minutes in a taxi. The West Midlands Metro is the easy option for guests in heels or in the rain: board at Grand Central and get off at Library or Brindleyplace, both a few minutes away on foot.

Drivers should use Q-Park Brindleyplace. It is cheaper when booked ahead through YourParkingSpace, and the code SIAMAIS10 takes a further 10% off. Buses stop on Broad Street, 3 minutes away, and Sheepcote Street, 4 minutes away. The venue has disabled access and facilities. One practical note for hosts: there is no cloakroom, so tell guests to travel light in winter.

See the room first, then make a booking enquiry

You can walk through Siamais online before you commit to anything. The 3D virtual tour shows the teal velvet seating, the hanging birdcages and lanterns, the hexagonal tiled floor, the long back-lit bar and the heated, covered terraces, so you can judge for yourself how private a birdcage booth feels. The events brochure is available as a PDF and covers the hire options in one document you can forward to whoever is paying.

When you are ready, send the enquiry form with your date, guest numbers and the occasion, call 0121 643 3993 or email birmingham@siamais.co.uk. The more we know about the group, including allergies and dietary needs, the more useful our first reply will be. Chicken and lamb dishes are halal, and there is a full vegan set menu, so mixed tables are straightforward to cater for.
