18th, 21st, 30th or 40th: which nights work

Age rules come first, because they decide your guest list. From Friday to Sunday, nobody under 18 is admitted to Siamais at all. From Monday to Thursday, under 18s are welcome but must leave by 8pm. The venue runs Challenge 25, so anyone who looks under 25 should carry photo ID.

For an 18th birthday, that means the party works from the birthday itself onwards. A weekend 18th is fine as long as the birthday person and every guest has already turned 18. If half the friendship group is still 17, pick a different venue or wait a few months. 21st birthdays have no such problem and tend to suit a Friday or Saturday, when the music moves to soulful house, remixes and dance classics. For a 30th or a 40th with children in the family, a Monday to Thursday early dinner lets the under 18s join until 8pm.

A birthday party venue Birmingham groups can size up or down

Not every birthday needs a whole venue. For a smaller group, the gold birdcage booths are the semi-private spots in the restaurant, and they are what most birthday tables ask for. Bigger groups can take a sectioned area. You book these as a group reservation on a set menu or the a la carte, without a hire fee conversation.

A big birthday, the sort a 30th or 40th often turns into, can take Siamais exclusively. The whole venue holds 120 seated or 150 standing, and hire starts from £2,000 depending on the day and time. Because the bar and restaurant sit side by side, a takeover can run as drinks first, dinner second and bar again afterwards. The heated, covered terraces stay usable all year, which helps when the guest list includes smokers or people who want a quieter chat.

Birthday food: Thai sharing menus priced per head

Set menus take the argument out of a group bill. Everyone pays the same, the food arrives for the table, and nobody has to work out who had the extra starter. Taste of Siam costs £44.95pp and brings chicken wings, prawn rolls, satay, fish cakes and spring rolls, then four mains with rice. The Siam Feast at £49.95pp adds calamari, golden bags and tempura prawns, with duck in tamarind sauce and chicken Pad Thai among the mains.

For a milestone, the optional lobster middle course on The Siam Feast is £9.50pp, one lobster between four people. Vegan and vegetarian guests have their own three course menu, Grounded in Siam, at £41.95pp. Chicken and lamb are halal. If you hire the venue, you can swap the seated meal for canapés or a buffet, or ask for a bespoke menu built around the birthday person's favourites.

Birthday drinks from the Book of Siam

The cocktail list is a big part of why people choose Siamais for a birthday. The Biscoff Daiquiri is rum, cream and caramel. The Tequila Cloud is tequila and cream served with what the menu simply calls "air". The Toffee Old Fashioned suits the guest who wants something stronger and slower. All three sit in the £11.50 to £12.50 range, and the classics list covers the Pornstar Martini, Espresso Martini and Mai Tai for anyone who knows what they like.

The obvious birthday order is Bang Pai Falls, a £25 sharing cocktail that comes to the table with fire, smoke and overproof tiki rum. For a toast there is champagne from Telmont Brut up to Dom Perignon at £350. Drivers and non-drinkers have eight mocktails to choose from at £7.95, including alcohol free versions of the Mojito, Pina Colada and Pornstar Martini.

What a birthday at Siamais costs

For a table or booth booking, pick a set menu between £41.95 and £49.95 per person, add drinks, and that is the bill. Table bookings take a £5 per person deposit, which comes off the total on the day. Walk-ins are welcome when there is space, but a birthday group should always book.

Private hire works on a minimum spend. Whole-venue hire starts from £2,000, the exact figure depends on the day and time, and all food and drink from Siamais counts towards it. A 50% non-refundable deposit confirms the date and is deducted from the final bill. A useful way to sanity check exclusive hire is to multiply your realistic headcount by what each guest is likely to spend on dinner and drinks. If that lands near the minimum, hiring the venue costs you little more than a large booking would.

Decorations, photos and entertainment

Siamais works with trusted venue decorators, photographers and entertainers, and can arrange them for you as part of the booking. That covers the usual birthday requests: balloons and styling, a photographer early in the night while everyone still looks fresh, and entertainment for an exclusive hire. Ask when you enquire and the team will tell you what is possible on your date.

The room photographs well on its own. There are teal velvet booths, gold birdcages hanging overhead, lanterns, a hexagonal tiled floor and a long bar lit from behind. Daytime birthdays get plenty of natural light. If you want to check angles and table positions before choosing a spot, the 3D virtual tour on the website lets you walk the restaurant, bar and terraces from your phone. Dress code is smart casual, with no sportswear, so tell your guests in the invitation.

Finding us and booking your date

Siamais is in Oozells Square, behind Brindleyplace, at 6-7 Brindley Place, Oozells Street, B1 2HS. Guests coming by train can walk from New Street in about 16 minutes or jump on the tram from Grand Central to Library or Brindleyplace. Buses stop on Broad Street, 3 minutes away. For those driving, Q-Park Brindleyplace is the car park, cheaper through YourParkingSpace with SIAMAIS10 for another 10% off. Utilita Arena is about 5 minutes away, handy if the birthday includes a gig.

To book, send the enquiry form with the date, the number of guests and the space you are after: a booth, an area or the whole venue. You can also call 0121 643 3993 or email birmingham@siamais.co.uk. Saturday nights are the first to fill, so a milestone birthday is worth arranging a couple of months ahead. Gift vouchers are sold through siamais.giftpro.co.uk if guests ask what to buy.
